Why Is Paper Recycling Important Environmental Sciences Essay

Why Is Paper Recycling Important Environmental Sciences Essay The enormous measure of paper squander being created in the previous years has truly being an incredible worry to the general public, the removal and treatment process associated with paper squander had being on the expansion, Richard A. Venditti (1992) said 37% by weight of Municipal Solid waste are being created are gotten from paper, yet as at Due to this enormous measure of the paper squander being delivered by homes, ventures and office, reusing of the paper squander innovation has help in the decrease of the aggregate sum of waste being placed in the landfill and furthermore help in the decrease of high reliance of crude materials for paper creation from plants(vegetable strands) which in turns help in the decrease of the manner in which tress are being cut for paper creation in this way protecting our condition and furthermore diminishes vitality use and CO2 and Methane emanation compaired to the ordinary creation procress from plants The reusing of paper squander which significantly gets it crude materials from: Mill broke ( paper scrap from paper creation), Pre purchaser squander ( paper being disposed of before utilization by buyers) and post customer waste(paper being disposed of after use), has helped in the decrease of deforestation. Because of the wellspring of crude material for paper being created by reusing there is high reliance of paper being delivered from reusing paper, Paper online said that 90% paper are imprinted on reuse paper,90% layered boxes are produced using reuse fiber and 54% of strands which are being utilized in new paper and board are gotten from reused paper Europe has being the main reusing of paper on the planet, contemplates has demonstrated that in excess of 60 tons of paper of paper are being gathered every year and still on the expansion which has surpass 60%of the paper devoured since 2005 (Paper on the web) Paper Recycling is for the most part the preparing of waste paper into new paper item. Squander paper, which are significantly gotten for workplaces, homes and businesses are being taken to the reuse bank by neighborhood approves and afterward gathered and prepared into paper related item. Reusing of waste paper has influenced the earth in a positive manner by the decrease in the reliance of plant for crude materials for paper creation which is vegetable filaments gotten from plants. Reusing of waste paper gets its crude materials from three catergories,  Mill broke (paper trimmings and other paper scrap from the assembling of paper, and is reused inside in a paper plant),  Pre-shopper waste(is material which left the paper factory, which has been disposed of before it was prepared for purchaser use) and  Post-buyer (squander is material disposed of after customer use, for example, old magazines, old papers, office squander, old phone catalogs, and private blended paper) Debunk ing the Myths of Recycled Paper Pre reusing Innovation associated with paper reusing The innovation associated with paper reusing includes significantly five stage after assortment of waste from the waste bank. The Seven stages which are, Pick up structure home workplaces and business, Sorting to evacuate contaminants, Re-pulping which invovles mixing of d arranging with water and synthetics, Filtering to expel scraps and impurites, De-Inking by utilization of sudsy synthetic compounds, Draining of the water, Drying by the utilization of warmth and Rolling and Packing of the created paper. I will be taking a gander at every one of this means exclusively in my report. Get General waste from Homes, officesRecycling really begins from our homes, workplaces and business, where we separate the kind of waste to be arranged by placing them in explicit removal packs and receptacles prepared for assortment. The waste container (the recyclable receptacle) which has the paper content inside are being gathered by neighborhood assortment operators and afterward moved to the reuse bank where it is being sifted through and perused for reusing Paper Recycling Reuse Bank Recyclable waste Get by neighborhood specialist Non-Recyclable waste Arranging to evacuate contaminants Arranging is significantly done by the utilization of reusing arranging line (RSL) in the reuse bank. The reusing arranging line sifts through the recyclable materials gotten from home into various recyclable materials(like paper, plastic, plastic, jars) and are then offered to various recyclers. The reusing arranging line can be completely or halfway mechanized or can include manual arranging. In the computerized framework the RSL isolates the recyclables as far as their thickness, size, and concoction sythesis it utilizes explicit properties of partition gear (like , trommels, thickness sorters, and attractive separators) to isolate the recyclables into various classes. The mix of both manual arranging and the mechanized arranging give an extremely high productivity arranging framework. Trommels : this partition hardware is being comprised of various screen gap sizes at the external piece of the gear. The screen size gets bigger as the through the length of the screen permitting the recyclables be isolated by size. Thickness sorters: this partition supplies utilized thickness of the recyclables for d detachment process by the utilization of air blade which produces controlled air stream with a particular speed in order to blow the lighter recyclables like plastic, jars or paper into an assortment chamber contingent upon the air stream speed. Attractive separators : This is significantly the utilization of vortex present as a methods for isolating of ferrous metals like  aluminium which are being lifted away from the recyclable blends. Transport line: this is mostly utilized during manual arranging, where the recyclables materials travels through the transport line and it is by and large physically figured out hand picking by laborers. (www.p2sustainabilitylibrary.mil/p2/7_III_8) In the wake of arranging they are then baled and being offered to the very recycler for the reusing of their different parts. The baled squander paper are then taken to the paper plant for the reusing. Re-pulping The baled paper squander are then slide into various sizes and afterward move in a pulper for it to get blended in with water and synthetic. Contained in the pulper is a blend of water and dipolar aprotic protophylic solvent{1}. The water being utilized IN this blend is being  optimized to get a tetrahedral grid of common hydrogen-oxygen-hydrogen edges through the modification of its hydrogen holding framework. Because of the aptimization of the water parts the water structure creates properties of littler bunch design, lower surface strain, expanded dissolving powers, higher conveying effectiveness, microbiological strength and more noteworthy reactivity(1) which decides the describes of the last mash being delivered. Blending of this water improved water with dipolar aprotic protophylic dissolvable would create a fluid arrangement of dipolar aprotic protophylic dissolvable. The fluid arrangement is then blended in the paper squander in the pupler until aâ stereochemical modifications happens with the waste paper which cause a full repulping of the paper squander. The watery arrangement is then emptied away out of the pulper after the consummation of the procedure and the prodced mash from the paper squander is expelled out of the pulper afterways. The repulping of the paper squander structures a pulp(i.e the paper squander then structures a mash). A pulper is significantly a blending tank which contain a mash feeder(which is utilized to take care of the waste paper, water and the substance into d pulper), turbine impeller , a blender (which is being driven by an engine to guarantee legitimate blending), sifter plates ( to guarantee that no undiluted particule leaves the pupler) (http://www.lenzing.com/technik/en/fiberandpulptechnology/2085.jsp) Separating After the mash has being extricated from the pulper its at that point being sifted and cleaned in order to evacuate contaminations (like waxy coatings, overwhelming inks, non wood-based fillers, glue, ink) present in the mash. Screening is the significant procedure required here, which involoves the utilization of strainers of various sizes along with radial cleaning framework are being utilized. Sieved sizes screens are being course of action in equal at framing diverse layer of stages. The mash is then being gone through the strainers which would channel of the undesirable imputires in this way delivering the unadulterated required mash required. De-Inking This is significantly the expulsion of printed ink from the paper strands by the utilization of sudsy synthetic compounds which includes both mechanical and concoction process. The synthetic and mechanical procedure are for the most part called buoyancy and wash deinking. Buoyancy process includes the exchange of the mash into the foam buoyancy cell in which the sopy concoction is then included the cell. The foam buoyancy cell generally work 45 550c. Air is then blowed through the mash in this way making the air get connected to the ink present in the mash and afterward its being left up away from the mash and suspend at the highest point of the compound .the buoyancy cell comprise of two round and hollow buoyancy cell with both have a flood forward wash and hexagonal fit as a fiddle a channel and release box joined to the cell.

Bhavesh.Amin Essay Example For Students

Bhavesh.Amin Essay CSC 4810-Artificial Intelligence ASSG# 4 Support Vector MachineSVM is a usage of Support Vector Machine (SVM). SupportVector Machine was created by Vapnik. The fundamental fates of the programare the accompanying: for the issue of example acknowledgment, for the problemof relapse, for the issue of learning a positioning capacity. Underlyingthe accomplishment of SVM are numerical establishments of measurable learningtheory. As opposed to limiting the preparation blunder, SVMs minimizestructural chance which express and upper bound on speculation mistake. SVM are well known in light of the fact that they for the most part accomplish great mistake rates and canhandle abnormal kinds of information like content, diagrams, and pictures. SVMs driving thought is to arrange the info information isolating themwithin a choice limit lying a long way from the two classes and scoring alow number of blunders. SVMs are utilized for design acknowledgment. Basically,a informational collection is utilized to prepare a specific machine. This machine can learnmore by retraining it with the old information in addition to the new information. The trainedmachine is as special as the information that was utilized to prepare it and thealgorithm that was utilized to process the information. When a machine is prepared, itcan be utilized to foresee how intently another informational index coordinates the trainedmachine. As such, Support Vector Machines are utilized for patternrecognition. SVM utilizes the accompanying condition to prepared the VectorMachine: H(x) = sign {wx + b}Wherew = weight vectorb = thresholdThe speculation capacities of SVMs and different classifiers differsignificantly particularly when the quantity of preparing inf ormation is little. Thismeans that if some component to boost edges of choice limits isintroduced to non-SVM type classifiers, their presentation debasement willbe forestalled when the class cover is rare or non-existent. In theoriginal SVM, the n-class arrangement issue is changed over into n two-class issues, and in the ith two-class issue we decide the optimaldecision work that isolates class I from the rest of the classes. Inclassification, in the event that one of the n choice capacities arranges an unknowndatum into a positive class, it is ordered into that class. In thisformulation, if more than one choice capacity arranges a datum intodefinite classes, or no choice capacities characterize the datum into adefinite class, the datum is unclassifiable. To determine unclassifiable areas for SVMswe examine four sorts ofSVMs: one against all SVMs; pairwise SVMs; ECOC (Error Correction OutputCode) SVMs; at the same time SVMs; and their variations. Another issue of SVMis moderate preparing. Since SVM are prepared by an illuminating quadratic programmingproblem with number of factors equivalents to the quantity of preparing data, training is delayed for countless preparing information. We talk about trainingof Sims by disintegration strategies joined with a steepest climb strategy. Bolster Vector Machine calculation additionally assumes huge job in internetindustry. For instance, the Internet is gigantic, made of billions of documentsthat are developing exponentially consistently. In any case, an issue exists intrying to discover a snippet of data among the billions of growingdocuments. Momentum web search tools check for catchphrases in the documentprovided by the client in a hunt inquiry. Some web search tools, for example, Googleeven venture to offer page rankings by clients who have previouslyvisited the page. This depends on others positioning the page accordingto their necessities. Despite the fact that these procedures help a large number of clients a dayretrieve their data, it isn't close at all to being an accurate science. The difficult lies in discovering website pages dependent on your inquiry question thatactually contain the data you are searching for. Here is the figure of SVM algorithm:It is critical to comprehend the system behind the SVM. The SVMimplement the Bayes rule in fascinating manner. Rather than evaluating P(x) itestimates sign P(x)- 1/2. This is advantage when our objective is binaryclassification with insignificant excepted misclassification rate. In any case, thisalso implies that in some other circumstance the SVM should be altered andshould not be utilized with no guarantees. .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 , .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .postImageUrl , .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .focused content region { min-tallness: 80px; position: relative; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 , .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:hover , .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:visited , .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:active { border:0!important; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; progress: murkiness 250ms; webkit-progress: haziness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:active , .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:hover { obscurity: 1; progress: mistiness 250ms; webkit-progress: mistiness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .focused content territory { width: 100%; position: relative; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content embellishment: underline; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; outskirt span: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-stature: 26px; moz-outskirt range: 3px; content adjust: focus; content design: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: supreme; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!importan t; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u0844f3b76de494a344941aba8427ec17:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: My Move from Vietnam to America EssayIn end, Support Vector Machine bolster bunches of genuine worldapplications, for example, content arrangement, written by hand characterrecognition, picture characterization, bioinformatics, and so on. Juvenile Delinquency Term Paper - 1100 Words

Juvenile Delinquency (Term Paper Sample) Content: Juvenile DelinquencyAuthorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s NameInstitutional AffiliationAbstractIt is important to understand the role locations play in the crime commitment among the juvenile. Most juvenile crimes have been reported to be in school. The number of school crimes has increased over the years. Despite the increasing evidence in the high juvenile crimes in specific locations, many studies show that juvenile crimes have been in the recent past treated as adult crimes. This paper statistically analyses the juvenile crimes and particularly deals with illicit drug use in schools. It further discusses the research findings of the reports and suggests what should be done with the research findings. The increase in drug use among children in high school especially in the senior years has called for a review in the use of drugs among their age group.IntroductionSchools and colleges are institutions that are reputable for contributing in the building of a nationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s foundatio n. It also serves as a foundation for stability and growth in the childà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s life. One of the greatest social problems is the crimes in schools. This hinders the growth of a society both socially and economically. It is important to analyze the facts that influence and surround the schoolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s environment and its association to crime. Understanding the environment will help reduce the crime rates that occur in the learning institution. Several resources have been used to develop a range of research on juvenile crimes. The main aim of the studies conducted in this area is to understand and explain the sources and causes of juvenile crimes.School related Juvenile Crime ProblemAccording to the population reports published by the United States department of commerce, an estimated 25% of the total populations are children under that age of 18 years. The number is expected to increase by the year 2020. This implies that the magnitude of issues affecting the children in the c ountry is high. This exposes the children to a high risk of juvenile crimes. According to the juvenile justice and delinquency prevention, research shows that the juvenile engage in risky behaviors such as over speeding while driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. The incidents reported concerning juvenile crimes amountedto estimated value 710,000 violent crimes between the year 2009 and 2010. The crimes were serious violent crimes. It was estimated that personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s ages between 7 and 17 were likely to be victims of suicide as they were victims of homicide.Although the rate at which juvenile offenders with cases related to drug abuse has declined, the rate of drug abuse by juvenile is still increasing. It is terrifying that the use of drugs in schools among students has been part of their daily routine to the school illicitdrug users. Most of the juvenile drug use cases have been traced from the age of 11. By the age of 11, most of them are counted as occasional drug users while at the age of 14 they are counted to be the regular users by the drug tests. There has been an estimated arrest of 2200 juveniles in cases related to drug abuse in school (Hartge and Smith, 2013). Mostly, high school seniors have been reported abusing drugs in the school premises. The abuse was done during recess and after the class hours. By 2011 school crime became common and 1 in every 8 students was involved in crime cases.By 2010, of the crime rates reported in school, half of the cases were reported to be use illicit drug. The greater percentage admitted to using alcohol. 48% of the seniors in school used drugs, 37% of the 10th graders and 21% of the 8th graders were reported on crime cases involving drug use. Marijuana was reported to be the highly used illicit drugs by these students. Many juvenile drug users were reported to smoke marijuana more than cigarette(Morgan, Morgan Santos, 2010).The use of heroine was reported to be the declining over the years w ith its decline being attributed to an average of 0.3 every year. Drug abuse has affected the school performance of the victims, most of them reported to be introduced to the process by trusted friends in schools. The drug abuse report estimated that males the leading sex in the use of illicit drugs in school (Burfeind Bartusch, 2011). Female sexes were reported to us drugs as a result of influence by their sexual partners in schools. Most of these cases happened in parties and school meetings outside the normal class hours. The illicit drug use led to a prevalence of gang activities such as stealing. These cases occurred due to the studentsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ thirst for drugs. Of all the gang cases reported, 3.8% of the cases were reported to be as a result of searching for money to purchase illicit drug by the juvenile.Drug cases have led to the erosion of good values in the society. Morally upright students under the influence of drugs are hard to find. This is because their behaviors and actions are influenced by the drugs taken. Although most parents blame the schools for their children behavior of drug use, it is not the fault of schools that such children engage in illicit drug use.Discussion on the Research FindingsThe illicit drug use is mainly pointed out to alcohol in the juvenile cases. However, the use of marijuana has increased over the years. The research found out that the decline in juvenile arrests on illicit drug use had declined due to the offenders admitting to the use of the illicit drugs. The findings on the statistics are of great concern to the citizens. However, most illicit drug users in school turned to drugs as a result of depression or low income level in their background. How The Advertisement Is Promoting Its Magic Eraser Product

Do the job that matters to you†¦ Our group has decided to choose a print advertisement from 2011 which we found on the Internet while searching for the perfect advertisement to bust. The Mr. Clean ad is promoting its’ magic eraser product. The advertisement captures an image of a mother and daughter scrubbing the shower with the product, depicting the tradition role of mother (wife) and daughter. We all agreed on this advertisement due to its blatant sexism, the notes of oppression towards women and when we look at the minor details of the ad, there were even more hidden implications included as well. The image in the advertisement was easy to bust because there was one main image with few words, giving us room to work with the advertisement and recreate it to spread a more positive image. We instantly began discussing ways to recreate the advertisement, talking about what we â€Å"want to do†, not what we are â€Å"supposed to do† as women. This advertisement was mainly chosen because of all the options it left us to be creative, and the message that was sent to consumers from this advertisement were explicitly wrong that it was so important to decode it and turn it into a more positive message for women. The Mr. Clean advertisement clearly targets the middle-aged women who stay home to take care of their children and household chores. The advertisement is obviously targeting women the typical â€Å"stay-at-home mom†. Does Hard Water Boil at a Higher Temperature

Does hard water boil at a higher temperature than pure water or regular tap water? The answer is yes. The difference in temperature usually is a degree or two. Hard water contains dissolved minerals, which cause boiling point elevation. Adding salt to water produces a similar effect. The more dissolved minerals in the water, the greater the effect. However, its not as significant as the effect of elevation on boiling point.

The Difference Between Plug-In and Standard Hybrid Cars

A hybrid vehicle uses two or more distinct types of power, such as a gas-powered, internal combustion engine plus an electric motor on a battery pack. There are two primary types of hybrid cars on the market, a standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Neither requires that you plug in the car to an electric source, however, with a plug-in hybrid you have the option to do so. The beauty of hybrid cars over gasoline-powered  cars is that they run  cleaner with fewer emissions, they get better gas mileage, which makes them more environmentally friendly, and depending on the model, you may be eligible for a tax credit. Standard Hybrids Standard hybrids are very much like regular gasoline-powered cars. The only difference is internal—the car can recharge its batteries by reclaiming energy through a process called regenerative braking or while driving on engine power. Standard hybrids do not need to be plugged in. A standard hybrid uses both a gasoline engine and an electric motor to help offset fuel costs and increase gas mileage. When the battery is heavily taxed by a lot of electric motor usage without a lot of braking, the internal combustion engine picks up the slack while the battery comes back up to charge. Hybrids still use gasoline as the primary source of power, you fill up the tank as you normally would. Popular standard hybrid models are the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. Luxury car makers like Porsche and Lexus in recent years have added hybrids to its fleet of vehicles. Plug-In Hybrids In order to increase electric motor cruising time, some manufacturers are creating plug-in hybrids that have more powerful batteries which can be recharged by â€Å"plugging in† the vehicle to normal household current. This feature allows the vehicle to perform more like a true electric car and less like a conventional gasoline car, all the while delivering exceptional fuel mileage. Plug-in hybrids, like the Chevrolet Volt, operate in much the same way as a hybrid by providing an all-electric driving range using a battery pack. Once the battery has been depleted, the vehicle can slip back to being a regular fuel-fed hybrid and recharge its batteries using the gasoline-powered motor as a generator. The big difference here is that you can also plug it in and recharge the electric motor instead of using the engine to charge it up. Depending on your driving needs, if you can plan your trips and just drive on electricity and then charge back up, you can go a very long time without having to gas up. All Electric Vehicles Although they are not considered hybrids since they run solely on electricity and are not a hybrid of anything, all-electric vehicles are worthy of mention if saving on gas is what you want to accomplish. All-electric cars like the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, Ford Focus Electric, and Chevy Spark EV run on electricity and use electrons as their solitary source of energy. The more you drive, the more of the battery charge is depleted. The biggest disadvantage is that there is no gas engine built in to rescue you if you run out the battery completely. All electric vehicles must be recharged either at your home or at a charging station.

Summary Of Beethoven s The Little Pathetique

Beethoven began the other two sonatas comprising the Op. 10 group in 1796, but may have started this particular sonata toward the end of 1795. All three of the sonatas of his Opus 10, it is dedicated to Anna Margarete von Browne, the wife of one of Beethoven s patrons, a Russian diplomat in Vienna. The work has been nicknamed the little pathetiquà © , as it shares many traits with the most known 8th sonata. Allegro molto e con brio, the first movement of the sonata, opens the exposition (mm.1-105) with a very lively and energetic phrase that builds tension by using ascending notes from the tonic chord. Although the phrase is important by setting the tone and energy for the rest of first movement, but it sets up a certain motive that can be seen in all three movements. This motive consists of a short note value followed by a longer note value (see example 1). The principal theme (mm.1-30) is filled with different variations of the motive such as in measures 13-15 where the motive is used in the left hand and descends compared to the previous ascension. Following the end of the principal theme, a transition (mm.32-55) occurs which modulates to F Minor and then modulates again to set up for the second theme (mm.56-63) in E-flat Major. At the end of the transition (mm.49-52), another variation of the short long-short can be seen in a retroversion of the format (see example 2) which is then followed by the motive filled in with neighboring tones between the down beats toShow MoreRelatedBiography of Ludwig Van Beethoven3909 Words   |  16 PagesCONTENTS Biographical Essay Further Readings Source Citation Updates BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY The instrumental music of the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) forms a peak in the development of tonal music and is one of the crucial evolutionary developments in the history of music as a whole. Fight Club and Feminism Essay - 2137 Words

The issue at the heart of the David Fincher film, Fight Club, is not that of man’s rebellion against a society of â€Å"men raised by women†. This is a film that outwardly exhibits itself as promoting the resurrection of the ‘ultra-male’, surreptitiously holding women accountable for the decay of manhood. However, the underlying truth of the film is not of resisting the force of destruction that is ‘woman’, or of resisting the corruption of manhood at her hand, but of penetrating the apathy needed to survive in an environment ruled by commercial desire, not need. In reality, Fight Club is a careful examination, through parody, of what it means to be a man; carefully examining the role of women in a society busy rushing towards sexual†¦show more content†¦These support groups (notably, the testicular cancer survivors’ group, â€Å"Remaining Men Together†) give Jack the emotional stimulation he so desperately craves. It is the enveloping comfort of cathartic release that is his salve; but, like all addictions, tolerance sets in, and the fix must be elevated. Henry A. Giroux, in his essay â€Å"Private Satisfactions and Public Disorders: Fight Club, Patriarchy, and the Politics of Masculine Violence†, maintains the argument that Hollywood films, being in a position of public pedagogy, exhibit a great deal of influence and must be regarded carefully; he criticizes the film, saying Fight Club: †¦offers up particular notions of agency in which white working class and middle class men are allowed to see themselves as oppressed and lacking because their masculinity has been compromised by and subordinated to those social and economic spheres and needs that constitute the realm of the feminine. Giroux sees the film â€Å"satirizing and condemning the ‘weepy’ process of femininization† that therapy groups offer as compensation for wounds it inflicted upon itself, and he’s right (insofar as there is no therapy group offered for the disaffected). Service Learning Reflection paper free essay sample

Service Learning Reflection Paper My volunteer work was at the Amarillo SPCA. The Amarillo SPCA is a home for cats and dogs that are still in good condition and can be put up for adoption. This organization is a non-kill and does not receive any assistance from the government; they simply rely on donations and sponsorships from local people and companies. They are located at 11901 S. Coulter in Amarillo. The shelter has 53 kennels, 12 puppy cages, 5 exercise yards, and 30 cat kennels. The purpose of the organization is to help these innocent animals find their forever home with an owner that will show them love and compassion as much as possible. Here at the Amarillo SPCA they are trying to stress that no animal should be abuse or neglected and there is always a second chance for them. While at the Amarillo SPCA, I volunteered on two different days. On the first day, I thought that I was going to be helping nurture the six animals, but instead I was in charge of taking out the little puppies while the other volunteers were cleaning out cages and changing the paper inside. We will write a custom essay sample on Service Learning Reflection paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I took them out to one of the five exercise yards and let them play around without leashes. On the second day of volunteering, I showed up and signed in. The man at the front desk asked if there was any way that I could help out by cutting paper for the puppy kennels. They were running low and needed help cutting as much as they could. Another volunteer and I cut paper for two and a half hours, and then helped the full time employee clean out kennels. I also did these tasks for the older dogs. Volunteering at the Amarillo SPCA was a great experience for me. The most fun part was actually playing with the dogs because it makes me feel like I am making a dog’s day. The most meaningful part to me was knowing that I was a part of an organization that helps animals who are in need of help. What I liked the most about volunteering at the Amarillo SPCA was actually helping out around the shelter and interacting with animals. The challenge for me was sitting inside while the other volunteers where outside playing with the dogs. This assignment could be improved by having one of the workers, from the  places that we will be doing our service work for, come in and explain what each place is and what they do specifically. I would suggest actually having to do an interview process to see if you are willing to come and help out anywhere that you have assigned. I would like to see this done more often in each class. Actually having to go out and do community service is fun. If this was a requirement for every level, it would help out in the long run. It would also help out some college students when it comes out to applying for jobs. It will show that you help out and give back to the community every semester. This project was actually fun and would recommend it to other students in the future.

Examine The Key Ideas Of Two Critiques Of Religious Belief free essay sample

The super-ego (the part of your subconscious that encourages you to act morally it represses anti-social impulses such as killing, and by inducing fear and guilt, it is crucial for civilization) then takes the place Of the father as a SOL_Cree Of internalized authority, which is derived from the family, education and Church. God is a father substitute and a projection of the super-ego. Freud believed that man is dependent on religion to make his helplessness tolerable and whilst he maintained this dependency he could never truly be happy.Freud realized that a feeling of helplessness in the face of external dangers, inner impulses and death and society, were at the route of religion. He observed that many religious rituals were similar to obsessive rituals. These are to protect the ego (the more primal part of your subconscious) from fantasies, desires and especially sexual impulses which, are normally repressed. Whilst Freud had some valid point some philosophers disagreed with his ideas. We will write a custom essay sample on Examine The Key Ideas Of Two Critiques Of Religious Belief or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Nelson and Jones disagreed with Freud opinion that the individuals relationship with God is dependent on their relationship with their father. They found that the concept of God correlated more highly with a persons relationship with their mother than with their father. Kate Elemental distinguished between projective religion (which is immature) and intrinsic religion (which is serious and relative) Freud assumed all aspects of religion were immature. Whereas not all religious beliefs are immature and can be considered serious and relative. Arthur Guardian believed Freud over played the connection between belief in God and psychopathology tendencies. He believed Frauds stance was just as neurotic as the religious preoccupations of others. Freud has no solid verifiable evidence for his reasons and jumps to conclusions, the way that religious believers jump to conclusions about their beliefs. Adkins, a well-known atheist and scientist critiques religion in four different ways. Firstly he argues that religious belief is not necessary, he argues that a Dianna world view makes religion unnecessary. He dismisses the belief that there is any ultimate significance in the world or human beings, He argues instead that our existence is a coincidence, and there is no need for any greater significance, or explanation of how we cane into existence, and the point is that we exist.Adkins also argues that belief about divine creation are essentially faith claims, they are blind, leaps of faith. He believes that religious belief keeps us from exploring the world further as, if we can say that God did everything, there is no need for another explanation. Moreover, he states that to assume that we were made for a purpose, and that there is purpose and meaning outside this world is wrong and an unwarranted assumption. Finally, most insultingly Adkins compares religion to a virus. He compares the way religion spreads to a virus that affects the mind. He associates religion with things such as misleading education, prejudice and inciting fear. He argues that key religious beliefs come into existence purely because someone though of them. If the pope was to claim that something happened simply because God told him then everyone would accept it as a fact, because that is the way religion works, and is not reliable or even truthful in some cases. Does one of the arguments demonstrate that there is no God?Neither arguments clearly demonstrated that there is no God however, most arguments for the existence of God dont prove that there is a God, as it is hard to prove whether something does or does not exist if there is no solid verifiable evidence for or against it. Adkins argument that religious beliefs are unnecessary does not disprove the existence of God it merely states that a God does not have to e xist. Just because he is not needed for humans to survive does not prove his non-existence.Moreover to claim that religious beliefs are like a virus that effects the mind is not an effective way to disprove God. He argues hat its teachings are unreliable but this does not directly disprove God, most legend have a basis in facts, to simply say that all religious teachings are lies is inaccurate, and for someone with a scientific mind, to disregard all of the views is not a very scientific way of thinking, as a scientist you should consider all angles.Adkins claims that do disregard scientific evidence and other views is narrow minded and not beneficial to humans, over he is guilty of the same things, to dismiss religious views so quickly with no solid evidence as to whether God does or does not exist, to simply dismiss the possibility of a God is narrow minded.

How are the main themes presented in the opening sequence of Baz Luhrmans film of Romeo and Juliet Essay Example

How are the main themes presented in the opening sequence of Baz Luhrmans film of Romeo and Juliet Essay In Baz Luhrmans film of Romeo and Juliet the opening scene captures many if not all of the main themes in some form or another. Many of these themes are depicted with: clips from the film, news readings, news reports, sound effects, music and text. The opening sequence which lasts for two minutes shows these main themes: modernisation, conflict (family), violence, tragedy, death, romance, an arranged marriage and religious aspects. The film came out in 1997 and was completely modernised except for on thing, it was still in Shakespearian language. The original text was kept completely as it was written. The setting has moved to an urban and modern location, Verona Beach in America. The modernisation is the first theme you see in the film. This concept of modernisation in the opening scene is important because the whole film has been updated and if the opening scene was not modernised then it would not make sense and none of the things you see would fit in with the rest of the film. The modernisation makes it easier to understand and you still get a feel for the original because the script is the same. You see a woman newsreader to us this is nothing special or strange but, in Shakespearian times this would never of happened as it is an important job and Women were not allowed these. The chief of police who is one of the most important characters in the film who in the real play was the Prince is black. There is no way is Shakespearian times that the Prince of Verona would have been black. This is due to old times being so racist and, this represents how far the whole world has come in not being racist and how much it has changed. This small thing to us is a dep iction of modernisation. Also the fact of the news report is an example of our times, as they definitely did not have televisions in those days. Instead of seeing the houses where they live you see the office blocks that they own. These are two main viewpoints of the city and are separated by a statue of Jesus Christ to show that the two families are separated by religion. At the beginning you see police cars and helicopters these are another definite modernisation to the film. When Romeo and Juliet was written the weapon that would have been used was a sword, in the film they use guns. However unlike today where gun laws are very tight and strict you see people walking around with them as if they were in the olden days and they were swords. The setting is an important part of the film. It is a modern city with big buildings and everything you would expect from a big city in America. The new setting is not an essential part to the film but I think it is a good one in making it easier to understand and relate to. It is a very dramatic city with very big features, which go with the play for example, the chapel of the Capulet family and the two skyscrapers, one belonging to each family. The big buildings represent the status of the two families among the other people in the city. It also shows the viewer that the two families are equal in class. This is also stated at the beginning, Both alike in dignity. The city is very glamorous and suits the style of living that you would expect from the two families. The family feud between Montague and Capulet is present and very clearly visible right from the start of the film. This is the main theme of the whole film, is that if the families had of settles their differences and got along then the marriage of Romeo and Juliet would not have had to be secret. Also Tybalt would still be alive and neither Romeo nor Juliet would have died. We can tell that they are enemies even if you did not know the plot to Romeo and Juliet at all. The viewers see the heads of the family at the top of the page and then you see that piece of paper in flames representing there hate for each other and their families. Also there office blocks are separated by Jesus showing us that there is only on thing that can actually keep them apart and that is Religion that being the power of God. Police are seen to be attempting to control riots however violence still breaks out. You can also tell that they have their differences from the news report. For something to be reported on the news it is often bad, this is exactly that. The news report tells us that the family conflict forced the two lovers into dying. From the start a sense of tragedy is placed in the viewers mind. Violence is the most featured of all the main themes in the opening sequence. This is important as it let you know what is coming. It also tells you how bad it actually is and that it is not some petty little squabble but it is actually very grave and serious maybe, more than at first presumed. The violence shows what is actually the deaths of all the main characters for example there are scenes from the fight at the petrol station, the beach and the riverside. The violence is what takes up most of the opening sequence but in the actual film it does not take up anywhere near the percentage you are lead to think. The first indication of violence comes right at the beginning of the scene. It is a police car that appears to be in pursuit. You then see flames, riots and people being arrested. There are then several clips of guns being fired and people being shot one after the other. There are several shots at the beginning from an aerial view, which appears to be from a helicopter, and y ou are led to think that the helicopter maybe the police are after someone. The sound effects that support this are also very important and lead you to the conclusion how much the police are involved in the actual film and therefore could be violence. We can tell this by the fact that we hear police radios going off over the music. They are not very distinct but never the less they are there. The music is very powerful and is the kind of music for this setting. It is fast, powerful and very much gives the impression of a climax and excitement, which in films violence brings. Tragedy is another very powerful theme in the film and is also featured very much in the opening sequence of clips. Many of the family members and Mercutio are seen to be dying. Some of the clips you do not realise that they are representing tragedy but after you have seen them in the film you realise that they are. An example of this being the Capulet vault where Juliet is laid to rest. Before you see the film as a viewer you may be lead into thinking that this is a regular church. Tragedy plays a very important part in the film and a very powerful one as well. We can see that it is a very important part in the film from the clips of people dying that are part of the family. You see the vault of the Capulet family several times. A character who is focused on quite a lot in the sequence is Father Lawrence. He is the one who gives Juliet the poison to take. This leads to Romeos death and therefore Juliet. The other people you see in the sequence all have something to do with tragedy. The heads of the family represent tragedy because there argument is what really killed Romeo and Juliet. The other main characters in the sequence are Tybalt and Mercutio who both die. The idea is enhanced from the music, which is classical, and the chapel that Juliet is set to lay in has a choir. The concept of doom is re-iterated by aerial news reports creating an atmosphere of severity and disaster. The idea of romance is another huge theme of the film. This is also very evident from the opening scene. It is important because without it none of the other themes would really seem as bad. For example the idea of tragedy would not really be as big as it is if Romeo and Juliet were not in love with each other. The idea of romance is a very important one. There is also the idea of an arranged marriage between Juliet and a rich bachelor named Paris. If this would never have been planned then Juliet would never have had to of taken the potion. We get the idea of romance from right at the very start when the newsreader says Star crossed lovers. This gives an impression of the fact that Juliet and Romeo were meant to be and that they were always meant to end in such a tragic way. You also see text flash across the screen at the start of the sequence, it says, Star crossd lovers, this supports what the newsreader was saying and that they were always meant to be. A key feature of the opening two minutes is the chapel where, Romeo and Juliet get married and they die. Again you have the idea of romance from they place where they get married but also the idea of tragedy from the fact it is the chapel that they die in as well. You see Romeo and Juliet together during the opening; this gives the idea of them being happy together and in love so refers back to the theme of romance. A choir performs the music you hear and when they were wed together a choir was singing at the service. There are visual effects that relate to romance like the text saying Start crossd lovers. Religion is a subtler theme of the film but is very strong at the same time. It is another theme that relates to all of the others in some way or another. For example it relates to tragedy and romance are two of themes that it relates to directly and those relate to others, so all the themes have a knock on effect on each other. A very interesting piece of visual imagery maybe one of the most important in the whole film is the idea of the two family sky scrapers are separated by a statue of Christ. This is obviously a religious piece of visual imagery and a very strong one. It shows that religion is the only thing powerful enough to separate the two families and that is also the only thing powerful enough to bring them together. For example the marriage of Romeo and Juliet. The first thing you see apart from the sky scrapers of the families is a statue of Christ and below that is the chapel that both Romeo and Juliet got married in and died in. Another example of visual indication towards religion is that there are crucifixs in the cars of the family members that you see being driven. You also see Father Lawrence in these clips introdu cing the cast and he is definitely a religious indicator but also one towards tragedy. The music that you hear is of a choir and once again this points to another theme as well as all of the others. That is religion due to the choir singing. You see a statue of Christ but only at aerial camera angle. This represents to us the importance of the statue in the whole film and the chapel below. The last thing you see is Romeo + Juliet there is a very clever piece of visual imagery in that. Where normally the word and would be. It is represented by a plus symbol, which can also mean the same; the plus symbol is represented by a crucifix. This also points to a religious theme and is the last thing you see of the two-minute introduction. The Camera actions are very interesting and make the two-minute introduction very intriguing and action packed. The beginning of the news report shows the camera zooming down a main road in Verona Beach. The camera is moving at a very high speed and maybe you are led to believe that it is being fast-forwarded. In fact I actually believe it being rewound from the end of the news report to the beginning and the story is told from the beginning. So in a sense the film is starting from the end and moving through back to the beginning within the two-minute opening. The camera is then placed inside a helicopter. Maybe this is through the eyes of a police helicopter or a news helicopter reporting. The camera spins around a certain point where the trouble appears to actually be around. That is the Vault of the Capulet and once again this is at the end of the film and therefore supports my theory of the tape being rewound. The cutting is very jagged and goes from one shot to another almost in stantly. This is due to there not being much time to fit it all in and when you fast-forward or rewind a film the shots go very quickly between each other. A film trailer also has this kind of cutting to fit it all in within a short space of time. In those two minutes you see many main themes of the film all in such a short length of time with many hidden points to them. All the main themes link up to one another and in therefore link up the whole film. Therefore all the main themes are equally important as each other and all make the film what it is. The music also relates to many themes in one way or another. The idea of a choir singing it allows it to fit in to many themes. Therefore I think that piece of music was a very good choice as it can make you think about all the main themes at once. The visual imagery was also very good in those short two minutes. Most of which referred to religion in some form or another.

Franz Boas on Fashion Deviation essays

Franz Boas on Fashion Deviation essays Franz Boas believes that, any action that differs from those performed by us habitually strikes us immediately as ridiculous or objectionable (Jacobus, 606). This is true, particularly when it comes to deviations from the implied dress code of society. Boas uses examples such as: formal dress worn in casual places, and out of style clothes from past centuries worn today. When we see this, we automatically think the person wearing these things is outlandish. Culture in San Antonio, Texas is very diverse and there are many different opinions of what is acceptable to wear and what is unacceptable. In some communities, people are dressed in exceedingly baggy pants and t-shirts. In other areas the dress is more traditional: nice pants, shirts and classy dresses. In each region, if someone strays from these guidelines, they are immediately thought to be abnormal. Dress isnt an indication of sanity, but people often treat it like it is. They label those who dress differently as weird and treat them crudely, unjustifiably. In most cases, when someone strays from the normal code of dress, the person is simply trying to express him/herself. They feel the need to be independent and individual, so they do something different from what everyone else conforms to. They like and accept who they are, and they show it through their clothing. They arent trying to make a scene, or cause a stir, they do it for themselves. In some cases, however, the non-conformists are trying to arouse reactions from those around them. They are seeking attention, and by wearing unusual clothing they usually get it. Your eye is naturally drawn to something out of the ordinary. If in a sea of people dressed in black there is a man wearing bright orange, who is your attention focused upon? The orange guy, of course! These days, there are more and more orange guys out ...

Alexander Pope’s poem The Rape of the Lock Essay Example for Free

Alexander Pope’s poem The Rape of the Lock Essay There are several aspects to Alexander Pope’s poem, The Rape of the Lock which cement it as a unique and important work. Not only do Pope’s use of imagery and other literary tools create a landscape of the world which is represented here, but Pope also creates the feeling of total emersion into the story for the reader.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   There are also many individual issues, within the work itself, which utilize their social standing to create emotion for the reader, such as the consumption of drugs throughout The Rape of the Lock. This creates an emotional bond with between the reader and the character within the poem by forcing the reader to make judgments on the characters. This judgment, then, becomes part of the reader’s vision of the world Pope created within the poem.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   While the poem itself was called to be written by Pope’s close friend, to end the feud between two families, what Pope succeeds in creating was an epic of lust, debauchery and social posturing. This tale, spun by Alexander Pope, seems just as much a condemnation of the social stratification of his era, as it is a plea for well-born families to put aside their petty squabbles. The events leading up to the writing of the poem, as explained by Pope were:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The stealing of Miss Belle Fermors hair, was taken too seriously, and caused an  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   estrangement between the two families, though they had lived so long in great friendship   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   before. A common acquaintance and well  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   wisher to both desired me to write a poem to  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   make a jest of it, and laugh them together again. It was with  Ã‚  Ã‚   this view that I wrote the Rape of the Lock. (Pope) This partly explains the use of the term â€Å"Rape† in the title. The use of such a strong word to describe such an inane event illustrates Alexander Pope’s fondness of parody – as well as his ability to illustrate the strange and often humorous idiosyncrasies of the wealthy elite.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   As Pope begins his five act poem, his first line both questions and accuses the parties involved in the rivalry by asking what â€Å"trivial things† could have been seen as such a â€Å"dire Offence†. The assault which is spoken of by Pope in this first canto is described as being committed by a â€Å"well-bred Lord† upon a â€Å"gentle Belle†. This assault is also questioned, in that Pope asked how a â€Å"Belle† could refuse the advances of such a well-born man. It is the assumption, from this early exchange, that it was socially expected that these two individuals, most certainly due to their social standing, would have no choice but to form a physical union – completely ignoring any personal choice in the matter.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Throughout the first canto, there are several examples of instances where Pope created a strange sense of reality through his use of word choice and order. Calling to attention the vision of a â€Å"birth-night beau†, a very festive and happy image, Pope juxtaposes the idea of non-consensual relations and enters into a dream-state. The allusions that Pope creates here are a very white and pure scene. The use of imagery such as the slippers, â€Å"silver sound†, and Belinda laying her head against her â€Å"downy pillow† creates a setting of safety and warmth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In line twenty four of the first canto, the poem begins to take on a decidedly fantastic feel. This is used to create the sense that Belinda is truly a slothful person. As she arises at noon, the reader is told that she returns to sleep – creating a sense of an unpressured and possibly spoiled girl with no responsibilities.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The dreams of Belinda are also illustrated here. Pope mentions several types of fantastic characters in this section which illustrate the unrealistic world Belinda inhabits. The angels and elves which Pope mentions number in the thousands – and through them, illustrate the mental age of Belinda – that of a child. These creatures also set up the meaning of the first canto, the warning of Belinda.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the clear Mirror of thy ruling Star I saw, alas! some dread Event impend, Ere to the Main this Morning Sun descend. But Heavn reveals not what, or how, or where: Warnd by thy Sylph, oh Pious Maid beware! This to disclose is all thy Guardian can. Beware of all, but most beware of Man! (Pope 1.108-114) This warning shows the reader, in Pope’s mock-epic style, that some sort of tragedy is about to unfold for Belinda.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This fantastical illustration continues through the end of the first canto. Pope uses the personification of the items in Belinda’s room to create the creatures which she sees through her dreams. Line 135 is a perfect example of this as Pope writes: â€Å"The Tortoise here and Elephant unite, / Transform’d to Combs†. It is obvious to the reader that Pope is describing a tortoise shell and ivory comb. However, in the dream world of Belinda, this object is represented by its literal components before losing this personification and becoming a tool to create Belinda’s physical beauty.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The second canto is used to by Pope to illustrate the importance of hair to the physical beauty of Belinda. Her majestic persona is described by Pope in order to place a heavy weight on the locks of hair she will eventually lose to the impetuous Lord.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Pope exaggerates Belinda’s physical attractiveness and the attractiveness of her jewelry as well. Though she is surrounded by many well presented youths, all adorned in splendor, â€Å"evry Eye was fixd on her alone† (Pope 2.6) Her physical beauty, as Pope describes it, is accentuated by the cross around her neck – which was so spectacular that â€Å"Jews might kiss, and Infidels adore†. (2.8) The power of a piece of jewelry to overcome religious conviction is very unlikely, however, for Pope, this is a perfect way to illustrate the perceived power of high social standing of the wealthy elite. For the members of the elite families of England, the importance of visual presentation cannot be over-stated, not even when compared to religion. Though the symbol she wears is a Christian icon, its beauty – both from its construction and the fact that it is being worn by a young girl of such attractiveness as Belinda, it could seemingly convert Jews and heathens from their chosen dogmas.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It is also in canto two that the Baron, who will perpetrate the rape of the lock, is introduced. Lines twenty nine and thirty of the second canto reads: â€Å"Th Adventrous Baron the bright Locks admird, / He saw, he wishd, and to the Prize aspird†. This introduction of the Lord creates an interesting situation for the reader. Despite the several dozen lines of text which describe the beauty of Belinda’s clothing, jewelry as well as her physical features, it is the locks of hair that hang against her neck which the Baron first sets eyes upon, and subsequently longs for.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The first feelings of the Baron are shown to be violent in nature.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Resolvd to win, he meditates the way,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   By Force to ravish, or by Fraud betray;   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   For when Success a Lovers Toil attends,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Few ask, if Fraud or Force attaind his Ends.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (2.31-34) This illustration of the man’s intent shows the reader that the Baron does not visualize the hair on Belinda as a part of Belinda – if he recognizes Belinda at all. The hair that hangs on her neck, however, is instantly revered as a stately prize.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It is also through this section that the locks of hair are given a sexual persona. At no time does the Baron speak, or think of Belinda as a source of joy, but rather her hair as an all encompassing quest. The immediacy of the Baron’s passion for the locks of Belinda’s hair illustrates a very important aspect of his personality – the trophy is more important than the conquest. It is the intent of the Baron to display the locks of hair, as one would display a commendation. The locks of would signify the physical conquest of the beauty of Belinda – whether or not that conquest ever actually occurred.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The signification given to the locks of hair on Belinda’s head is that of her chastity. By removing them, the Baron, in so much as it was seen in the times, had given Belinda the equivalent of a badge of promiscuity. The path through which the Baron achieves his goal, is illustrated through a card game. though this game is seemingly innocuous, it symbolizes to very distinct and overt actions – the first being war, with the direct imagery within the poem, and the other being sex, by the eventual winning of the locks of chastity by the Baron.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The victory of the card game enables the Baron to cut the locks of hair from Belinda’s head. This action, keeping with the tone of the title of the poem, is illustrated violently – though the reality of the action was certainly far less extraordinary.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Peer now spreads the glittring Forfex wide,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Tinclose the Lock; now joins it, to divide.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Evn then, before the fatal Engine closd,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A wretched Sylph too fondly interposd;   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Fate urgd the Sheers, and cut the Sylph in twain,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (But Airy Substance soon unites again)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The meeting Points that sacred Hair dissever   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   From the fair Head, for ever and for ever!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (3.147-154) The words used by Pope in this stanza are undoubtedly violent. Though the Baron is removing the hair with the pressured permission of Belinda, Pope chooses to paint this scene as though the Baron was attacking her, killing her, and/or ravaging her body. Pope also uses strange images to create the picture in the reader’s mind. Line 148 states that the scissors were closed around the hair, cutting it; however, the language chosen by Pope creates the image of both conjunction and disjunction.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This stanza is followed by:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Then flashd the living Lightnings from her Eyes,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   And Screams of Horror rend th affrighted Skies.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Not louder Shrieks to pitying Heavn are cast,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When Husbands or when Lap-dogs breath their last,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Or when rich China Vessels, faln from high,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In glittring Dust and painted Fragments lie!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (3.155-160) This violence that is being spoken of here, as intended by Pope, creates the feeling of murder, and military conquest. The emotions that Pope takes advantage of here, are for the express purpose of illustrating the over-exaggerated weight placed in the locks of hair. This scene is intentionally written so violently, as to show the reader that the members of this social stratum have little understanding of the true importance of things – such as locks of hair.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Throughout canto four, Pope makes several allusions to the act of torture. It is the intent of these lines to show the reader that the taking of the locks of hair, for Belinda, however insignificant as they may truly be, was a painful and violating event. Meanwhile, the Baron, himself, calls into question the validity of the social significance of the hair: â€Å"While the Fops envy, and the Ladies stare! / Honour forbid! at whose unrivald Shrine / Ease, Pleasure, Virtue, All, our Sex resign†. (4.104-107)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The remainder of the poem, for Pope, further illustrates the illogical amount of importance placed on the loss of Belinda’s hair. The insistence that â€Å"Fate and Jove† where in the audience of this event, illustrates for the reader that the society which Pope is lampooning here feels that the Christian God and the pagan gods would be affronted by witnessing such a horrible action. Pope also suggests that the loss of Belinda’s locks would be of such great importance to the surrounding women in her life that their own lives would come to a halt – â€Å"For who cam move when fair Belinda fails?† (5.4)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Pope offers no redemption for the couple, or the society they inhabit. By line ninety-four of the fifth canto, Belinda and the Baron engage in actual combat. Pope uses this fight to further illustrate the complexity of this society’s skewed priorities.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Now meet thy Fate, incensd Belinda cryd,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   And drew a deadly Bodkin from her Side.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (The same, his ancient Personage to deck,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Her great great Grandsire wore about his Neck   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In three Seal-Rings which after, melted down,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Formd a vast Buckle for his Widows Gown:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Her infant Grandames Whistle next it grew,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Bells she gingled, and the Whistle blew;   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Then in a Bodkin gracd her Mothers Hairs,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Which long she wore, and now Belinda wears.)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   (5.86-96) The fact that the petite and beautiful Belinda pulls a blade from her side, and attacks the Baron with it, is against the idea of the age – where men are the fighters and women are weak in and in need of protection.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   This attack by the young maiden is followed by the powerful Baron’s begging for his life â€Å"ah, let me survive†. (5.101) This, again, goes against the expectations of the reader, creating a setting of irrationality. These actions by Pope to create this skewed reality, are effective in forcing the reader to see the entire world of The Rape of the Lock as improbable.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Throughout the poem, Pope utilizes the tools of the ancient epic poems to create a sense of importance and truth to the work. Just as Homer had with his Iliad, Pope creates a tale of heroic and historical importance. However, this is simply a ploy to expose the utter lack of importance of the issue at hand. The entirety of the poem is an exaggeration of the expectations of the reader, and their knowledge of history and poetic license.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The complexity of Pope’s couplet rhyming as well as the loose iambic lines, suggest that the work is meant to be seen just as the historical epics had been. However, the use of exaggerated metaphors and unlikely situations confront that sense of importance – and overpower it. The voice that Pope uses throughout the poem allows the reader to feel at ease with the untrustworthiness of the narrator.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It was the intent of Alexander Pope to illustrate a situation in which a ludicrous amount of importance was placed on a fairly insignificant object – hair. Though the fact is never revealed within the poem, hair regrows naturally. This means that regardless of the taking of the hair by the Baron, given ample time, the hair would be replaced and the event completely forgotten. However, as with the strain between the two families for which Pope was inspired to write about, the event was seen as somewhat of a major catastrophe. WORKS CITED Pope, Alexander.
